WorkSafe can pay the reasonable costs of supply (purchase/hire) of equipment and related services to assist a worker in the rehabilitation of their work-related An injury/disease is work related if it arose out of or in the course of employment and the scope of employment. injury or illness or where the worker’s work-related injury or illness causes impaired function of the worker’s activities of daily living.

WorkSafe can consider paying for equipment where that equipment promotes function and assists in the recovery of a work-related injury or illness. WorkSafe can also consider the reasonable costs of related services, including repairs, maintenance and delivery of equipment.

WorkSafe have a panel of suppliers who are contracted to supply equipment to injured workers (Contracted Equipment Supplier).

The Contracted Supplier Equipment List is a guide to approved high cost equipment available through WorkSafe's Contracted Equipment Suppliers. The list is a resource for Treating Health Professionals (THP Treating Health Practitioner) to use when recommending equipment items valued at $1,000 (excluding GST Goods and Services Tax) or more. Items valued under $1,000 (excluding GST) are not included on the list (excluding continence, wound care and nutritional equipment).

Agents can order prescribed equipment directly from any Contracted Equipment Supplier if the equipment item is:

  • valued under $1,000 (excluding GST) and available from a Contracted Equipment Supplier, or

  • listed on the Contracted Supplier Equipment List.

Agents must order prescribed equipment from the WorkSafe Equipment Purchasing Team if the equipment item is:

  • valued at $1,000 (excluding GST) or more and is not on the Contracted Supplier Equipment List, or

  • requested from a non-contracted supplier.

Agents must ensure the THP has provided clinical justification for the recommended equipment item/s..

Specific Equipment Items are categories or types of equipment that have additional or alternative prescription criteria and requirements to the process described above. This includes:

  • medical and non-medical beds and mattresses

  • continence

  • wound care

  • nutrition

  • footwear

  • life support equipment

  • mainstream multi-functional technology (MMT)

  • optical

  • personal alarms and monitoring services (safety items)

  • room temperature control equipment

  • sport and recreation

All providers of equipment and related services need to be registered with and approved by WorkSafe to provide equipment and related services.
